RE: Discussion 2 – Week 6

COLLAPSE

Week 6, Post 2:

Video Description:

John Anner is a PhD student at Walden University. He is studying Public Policy. With his degree, he hopes to bring positive social change by building organizations that are solution driven and combine intellectual, academic, and scientific rigor to provide a good education, healthcare, and clean water to underdeveloped areas in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Specific care includes heart surgeries and dental care to children.

Code Examples:

  1. Dedicated

From the transcript:

“And throughout my entire career, my focus has always been on how to provide solutions to problems that seem so difficult and so large that it’s almost impossible to think of how any small organization can solve them… I’ve been a practitioner for almost 30 years.”

“Meaning we help an individual child get heart surgery and then the next, and the next, and the next. “

From field notes:

“I am impressed with his determination and belief that he can tackle such a monumental feat. It seems impossible, but a journey begins with one step.”

  1. inspired

From the transcript:

“For me is very exciting. It’s already changing the way that I view my work.”

“I’m very excited about this opportunity.”

From field notes:

“This program saves and betters many lives. What a great cause.”

Explanation:

When coding, one is looking for patterns that can be translated to themes to understand meaning of others’ experiences (Saldana, 2016). The Words that are spoken linked to one’s experiences, perceptions, and feelings. Thus, the focus of coding was to find feelings and perceptions of the participant. This is also known as descriptive coding (Ravitch & Carl, 2016). Descriptive coding denotes the researchers understanding of what the participant is feeling.

Reflections and Questions:

This is the first time I have been introduced to coding, so I have minimal understanding of this process. However, I believe after last week’s readings and discussions I have a better understanding as well as more confidence in my ability to code. I realize that it is important to use words and phrases that are adequate, and which articulate the message in the clearest way. I also believe that after doing this assignment, I feel a stronger connection to Mr. Anner and his mission.
