Advanced nurse practitioners and their colleagues should demonstrate exceptional sensitivity to the needs and cultural values of their clients, and take steps to enhance and maintain high levels of cultural self-awareness.?After completing the Cultural Competence Self-Assessment Checklist, my score is 109. However, I think that the number does not matter as much as the knowledge obtained from the checklist. Developed by the Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society (n.d.), it addresses two dimensions of cultural competence. The first one is providers’ cultural self-awareness. Here, I score “very well” or “pretty well”. I have a profound understanding of my worldviews, values, principles, and prejudices, and I can anticipate the impact that they will have on the provision of care to diverse populations. I still need more understanding of non-European cultures. The second dimension is that of cultural awareness or competence, or the amount of knowledge that we hold about other cultures. I find myself very adaptive to different cultures. I always seek engagement and opportunities to advance my skills. I showcase respect and tolerance in cross-cultural situations. I still need to refine my adaptability, or ability to put myself into the shoes of my diverse, multicultural colleagues and clients.?Standing aside are the worldviews in regard to the beliefs and values of underserved populations in the community. The issue is important, since trust, rapport and mutual respect are the foundational pillars of culturally competent advanced nursing practice (Peralta, Gillispie, Mobley, & Gibson, 2019). Unfortunately, my view of underserved populations is incomplete. For example, my personal vision of these populations is predominantly pessimistic, with a strong element of compassion and sympathy. Yet, many underserved individuals demonstrate exemplary ability to control their health behaviors and maintain an adequate health status, even if they face financial difficulties. This is why McGregor, Belton, Henry, Wrenn, and Holden (2019) emphasize the importance of cultural competence training for healthcare providers. Such training can improve providers’ perceptions of underserved populations, creating a foundation for promoting equity and justice. merl 1 Health Science Science Nursing Share QuestionEmailCopy link Comments (0)
