COUN5336 CU Awareness of Worldviews and Considerations in Counseling discussion

Description

Awareness of Worldviews and Considerations in Counseling

Discussion Context

Derald Wing Sue was at the forefront of bringing attention to the marginalization and at times oppression of cultural minorities in traditional counseling or therapy in the 1970s. Building on his early work, Sue and Sue (2016) presented the concepts of locus of control and locus of responsibility as central in the formation of worldviews, and related to our lived experiences of privilege or oppression. In fact, they explained that “[f]or marginalized groups in America, a strong determinant of worldviews is very much related to the subordinate position assigned to them in society” and they went out to caution that “[h]elping professionals who hold a worldview” different from that of their clients and who are unaware of the basis for this difference are most likely to impute negative traits to clients and to engage in cultural oppression” (p. 166).

For the Unit 4 Cultural Autobiography assignment, you will resume your viewpoint of a counseling or therapy intern at Riverbend City during your internship course. For this assignment, you will be interviewing a family or other member from a group with whom you share a cultural heritage. Part of the goal of this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to examine how your identity has developed, your worldview, and its influence on your professional practice.

Discussion Prompt

This discussion will provide you with an opportunity to examine and reflect on your current worldview and its implications for your practice. This will be good preparation to help you build towards successfully completing the unit 4 assignment.

In your initial post:

  • Consider the four worldviews presented in your Counseling the Culturally Diverse text and identify which of the four worldviews most closely resembles your own.
  • Discuss the implications of your worldview for culturally alert counseling or therapy.
  • Explain what steps you plan to take to demonstrate your trustworthiness and credibility as a counselor or therapist.
Reference

Response Guidelines

Respond to the posts of at least two other learners. Offer an additional strategy to your peer for building their trustworthiness and credibility with an individual student, client, or family who may share your worldview.

Your responses should be substantive and contribute to the conversation by asking questions, respectfully debating positions, and presenting supporting literature relevant to the topic.

Learning Components

This activity will help you achieve the following learning components:

  • Explore steps to promote credibility as a counselor with diverse populations.
  • Identify and compare worldviews.
  • Explain implications of personal worldviews on the counseling process and relationship.

FIU Clients Ambivalence and Resistance to Change Essay

Description

Change Talk

https://health.mo.gov/living/healthcondiseases/chronic/wisewoman/pdf/MIRollingwithResistance.pdf

Roll with Resistance is a term used in Motivational Interviewing (MI) that addresses the client’s ambivalence and resistance to change. Reflecting is a skill often used when responding to a client’s resistance.

Be mindful that ambivalence and resistance are perfectly natural parts of the process of change.  Whatever you do, REFUSE to confront, cajole, argue, persuade, lecture, reason with, blame, shame, or otherwise vehemently disagree with your client’s resistance/denial more than is necessary to accomplish your notification/clarification duties.  In other words, don’t ‘spin your wheels in the mud’ – instead wait until you have some “traction.”  Why add to the reasons your client can say s/he is not willing to change i.e., blaming or hating you is easier than feeling emotions that are more helpful: sadness, regret etc.

1.  Identify and discuss something you have wanted to change but have not done so yet…a change, which you are ambivalent.

2.  How would you respond to a clinician/therapist giving you a list of reasons why you should change?

3. Conversely, discuss how you would likely respond if the clinician/therapist changed their approach/style and asked questions such as, “Why would you want to make this change?” or “How important is it for you to make this change and why?”

4. Explain how the dynamics of the conversation make a difference in the therapeutic relationship.

Navigating Hypothesis Testing Applications Questions

Description

This week, you have read about hypothesis testing and will now apply this knowledge by writing a paper that addresses the following:

  • Provide an example of a hypothesis where a one-tailed hypothesis test would be used.
  • Provide an example of a hypothesis where a two-tailed hypothesis test would be used.
  • If a researcher has set alpha at 0.05 for a two-tailed hypothesis test, what is the p-value required to reject the null hypothesis?
  • A researcher has set alpha at 0.05. When the researcher analyzes the data from the experiment using a software program, she obtains a p-value equal to 0.932. Based on this p-value, should the researcher reject the null hypothesis or fail to reject the null hypothesis? Please explain your answer.
  • A researcher has set alpha at 0.01. When the researcher analyzes the data from the experiment using a software program, he obtains a p-value equal to 0.04. Based on this p-value, should the researcher reject the null hypothesis or fail to reject the null hypothesis? Please explain your answer.
  • A researcher is interested in whether music played during an exam will improve exam performance. Students in one class listen to music during an exam and students in another class take the exam in silence. The researcher set alpha at 0.05. Test scores for both classes are compared using a statistical software program. The mean test score for the class that listened to music during the exam is 95, while the mean test score for the class that took the exam in silence is 82. The obtained p-value from the independent groups t-test is 0.02. Be sure to answer the following questions:
    • State the null and alternative hypothesis.
